I am Michael Beck, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with private psychotherapy practices in Manhattan and Greenwich, Connecticut.
I work with individual adults, young adults and adolescents. Depending on your specific issue and identified goal, I will use my training in both psychodynamic and behavioral approaches to create a tailor made treatment plan on your behalf. My aim is to help move you toward a happier, more fulfilled and productive daily life.
My Approach
Therapy is a collaborative process and we will work together to help you gain insight into areas of concern. First and foremost is for me to create a safe space for you to speak freely about whatever is on your mind. Therapy should be a sanctuary for doing so.
As we move forward in treatment my goal is for you to:
Become more psychologically minded
Get in touch with your feelings to make more informed choices
Develop psychological capacities and internal resources to navigate your life and moods
By expanding your psychological capacities you may:
Develop realistic self-esteem
Make better use of your talents and abilities
Better regulate your emotions
Get to know yourself on a deeper level
Improve relationships with those important to you
With these skills clients typically express:
Greater insight into the emotions and motivations of themselves and other people
An ability to sit with a wider range of emotions
Greater flexibility and freedom
Services
I’m a clinical social worker, certified and licensed in the States of New York and Connecticut. I have experience working with a diverse range of people, ages, their conditions, circumstances and diagnoses.
For example:
If you are struggling with feelings or symptoms of anxiety and/or depression.
If you have suffered trauma that is causing stress or impairment.
If alcohol or other substance use is impacting your relationships or work.
If you are grieving a loved one maybe far beyond the time of loss.
If you are having difficulty with interpersonal or romantic relationships.
We will talk through your concerns, conflicts or issues and formulate goals. Then we will begin the process of exploration, discovery and ideally, self-transformation.
The Frame
Scheduled sessions are 45-50 minutes, available weekday evening hours. If you are a high school or middle school student, I can make Saturday morning appointments available. Depending on your needs/goals we can schedule time limited or open ended treatment per case. My rate is $250 per session payable by cash or check upon completion of session. A sliding scale can be made available depending on means.
If you need to cancel a session please do so 24 hours prior to the appointment otherwise you will be charged for the missed session. If you have an emergency within the 24 hour cancellation period and can’t make it you won’t be charged. I do not accept insurance but will provide you with the necessary paperwork for reimbursement.
About Me
I grew up in Westchester County, so I'm familiar with many of the stresses and pressures of living in the New York Metropolitan area. In my first career, I worked on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange trading commodity futures and options. I was fortunate to have the experience, and when the exchange transitioned to an electronic trading platform, I decided to retire and pursue a career dedicated to helping others.
Work
Currently, I work as a substance abuse clinician at The Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai-Opioid Treatment Program. As part of my job, I am responsible for conducting outpatient opioid treatment at Mt. Sinai West Hospital, during which I provide individual counseling for a caseload of patients with co-occurring substance abuse and mental illness. My job requires that I collaborate with patients to formulate treatment plans. In doing so, I partner with an interdisciplinary team consisting of fellow clinicians, a medical director, psychiatrists, medical residents, and nurses to ensure the highest level of patient care. I have implemented an emotional sobriety group and currently facilitate weekly sessions. I also participate in weekly case conferences, individual supervision, group supervision, and in-service trainings.
Education
I received my master's degree in social work from Columbia University, New York City. I have post-graduate certification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from Psychoanalytic Association of New York, formerly The Institute for Psychoanalytic Education at the NYU Department of Psychiatry/School of Medicine. Before all of that, I got my undergraduate degree in Business from Indiana University.
My Free Time
I live in Manhattan. I like to run. It keeps me fit and affords me some nice time outdoors. I also play hockey, golf and practice yoga. It helps me maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit balance.
Some Wisdom
Contact
The best way to get started is to call me for a free telephone consult. We will talk about your unique situation, what you may hope to accomplish and the treatment frame. If you and I decide we can effectively work together, we can arrange an in-person appointment for our first session.
